HEALTH - Researchers using reovirus to stimulate the immune system and provide power to kill liver cancer cells. It was also able to kill the hepatitis C virus, a common cause of primary liver cancer.
Primary liver cancer is the seventh most common cause of cancer death in the UK, with 5,400 people had a diagnosis and causes 5,100 deaths each year. The survival rate is getting smaller if surgery is not an option.
Reovirus is a virus that can cause respiratory diseases and stomach disorders in children, but most adults who have been exposed to the virus as a child, the virus generally do not return to cause disease.
Dr Stephen Griffin said: "Ultimately we hope that at the same time, the immunity formed by exposure to reovirus can prevent tumor and viral hepatitis that encourage tumor growth, we can provide more effective therapy and improve outcomes for patients.
Co-researcher Dr Adel Samson said: "It is becoming increasingly clear that one of the most powerful weapons for treating cancer is the immune system of our own."
